Course Objectives

  • Identify the basic assumptions of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) Model.

  • Summarize the goals of the IFS Model.

  • Recognize the three categories of parts based on the IFS Model.

  • Explain the role of Self Energy in the internal family system.

  • Identify the qualities of Self Energy.

  • Explore their own parts and their own connection to Self Energy through parts mapping and guided meditation.

Course Objectives

  • Apply at least one resource technique as utilized by IFS therapy in Phase Two of EMDR.

  • Identify one question used by IFS therapists in the assessment phase to determine readiness for processing.

  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively use a parts map with clients to explore protectors, exiles, and first responders (aka firefighters) in the internal family system.

  • Demonstrate the ability to guide clients towards accessing Self Energy through guided meditation.

  • Describe the relationship between the parts in IFS therapy and the autonomic nervous system (Polyvagal Parts Matrix, D. Yamada and A. Goodrich).

  • List two IFS informed clinical interventions used with clients when they are “stuck” in processing.

About the Instructor(s)

AMANDA GOODRICH, LMHC

Amanda Goodrich, LMHC (she/hers) is an EMDRIA-approved Certified EMDR Therapist, Approved Consultant, and EMDR Facilitator for Roy Kiessling’s EMDR Consulting. In addition, Amanda is a facilitator for an international trainer, author, and EMDR child expert Ana Gomez through her Agate Institute. Amanda provides individual and group EMDR consultation for the EMDR Basic Training, the EMDR Child Specialist Training, and the EMDR Sand Tray Specialist Training.

Amanda is a Level One Trained Internal Family Systems Therapist as well as an EMDR Child Specialist and EMDR Sand Tray Specialist. She discovered that IFS and Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) theories were her ideal combination to unlock a deeper understanding and acceptance of herself and for others. 

Amanda obtained her Masters in Counseling Psychology in 2003 from the University of Denver, and double majored in Psychology and Spanish from the University of Iowa. Through education and life experiences, Amanda maintains proficiency in Spanish. Amanda works to be an ally and support for marginalized populations and monolingual and bilingual Spanish-speaking clients to connect to and benefit from mental health services.

Through the IFS lens, Amanda is able to witness the scope of the world system and access compassion and curiosity to work with a diverse population. And it is with this lens that Amanda is able to sit with trauma and pain represented across a broad range of humans. 

Amanda has a background in working in non-profit mental health and substance abuse agency settings, and school settings, and has provided EAP services and management consultations, as well as CISDs to various employment settings.

Amanda co-owns Integrated Community Therapists, LLC in Iowa City, IA with three other amazing women and therapists. Amanda’s other passions include Jazzercise, drinking coffee, eating yummy food, floating on a lake or ocean, and spending time with family and friends. She lives in Iowa City, IA with her family, her dog, Nala, and her cat, Hush.



DARCIE YAMADA, LISW

Darcie Yamada, LISW (she/hers) is an EMDRIA-approved Certified EMDR Therapist, Approved Consultant, and EMDR Facilitator for Roy Kiessling’s EMDR Consulting. In addition, Darcie is a facilitator for an international trainer, author, and EMDR child expert Ana Gomez through her Agate Institute.
